AGNES MURPHY, 84
Longtime Islander was in water ballet group as teen

Longtime Staten Islander Agnes T. Murphy, 84, of South Beach, a homemaker who worked for the federal Veterans Administration during World War II, died Monday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze, after a brief illness.

Born Agnes T. Valcich in Red Hook, Brooklyn, she moved to Arrochar in the 1960s and to South Beach in 1975.

While attending high school in Brooklyn, Mrs. Murphy was a member of the Nacirema Girls, a Brooklyn-based group that performed water ballet shows in public pools across the borough.

"They were pretty well-known locally," said her son, Timothy.

During World War II, Mrs. Murphy worked for the Veterans Administration.

She was a parishioner of Holy Rosary R.C. Church, South Beach.

Mrs. Murphy loved to shop and cook for her children and grandchildren.

Family members remembered her as a warm, giving woman.

"The door was always open to anyone who came. She made her home theirs," said her son. "You were never a guest, you were part of the family."

Mrs. Murphy also shared a close bond with her sister-in-law, Anna Timmons. "There were so close, it's not like a sister-in-law passed. It's like the loss of a sister," said her son.

In addition to her son, Timothy, surviving Mrs. Murphy are her husband of 62 years, John F.; three more sons, Jack, William and Gerard, and eight grandchildren.

The funeral was scheduled for today from the A. Azzara Funeral Home, South Beach, with a mass at 9:30 a.m. in Holy Rosary Church. Burial was to follow in Ocean View Cemetery, Oakwood.
