Minster Post, 9 Nov 1906
Again the relentless Reaper has crossed the threshold of a marital home and a husband and father torn from the dear wife and children. Crying, grieving the Forsaken have stood at the grave of the deceased and lamented bitterly.
John Van Oss died on Sunday, 4 November, 1906 at 6:30 in the morning well provided with the sacred last rites at the age of 33 years 8 months and 19 days. The deceased was in his prime years when he fell ill a few weeks ago of typhus and his condition soon became so serious the worst fears were harbored. For days the seriously ill man hovered between life and death, and endured the severe suffering with resignation to his hard fate, and on Sunday morning was redeemed by the death of his misery. John Van Oss was a son of Mr. and Mrs. George Van Oss and a popular and respected member of the community. His family life was a very happy because he had a great many of the qualities of the Christian householder.
His industrious and frugal ways made it easy for others to trust him, and assured of his honest nature and his willingness to help his fellow men, it earned him the respect of all with whom he came in contact, and made his many warm friends sincerely regret his premature death, and they have expressed their heartfelt sympathy to the long-suffering family.
The deceased is survived by his wife Rosa Van Oss and five children, Luetta, Alfred, Arthur, Colletta, and Linus Van Oss, as well as his parents and siblings to mourn his passing. A large number of local school children mourned his passing. For several years, he worked as a janitor in the local schools and he was always a loyal friend and adviser for the children, and they will sorely miss this. The funeral took place on Tuesday morning with an extraordinarily large gathering. The St. Boniface Benevolent Society, the two fire companies, all school children, teachers and a large number of relatives and friends mourned the deceased. A solemn requiem was sung was in St. Augustine Church celebrated for the peace of mind of the deceased and the body then buried in the Catholic cemetery for the last rest. May the deceased slumber in peace until the resurrection. To the surviving the grievers we convey our innermost condolences.
