The 8th Mayor of Milwaukee,(the first Republican mayor)was born in Northfield, MA. His father, Samuel Prentiss, was a surgeon in the Revolutionary War, and his grandfather was a colonel in a Connecticut regiment of volunteers. A member of the Vermont Legislature. Came to Milwaukee in 1836, and opened a general merchandise store in partnership with Dr. L W. Weeks, who had married his wife's sister. Justice of the Peace; Pres. of the Territorial Council member of the Assembly. "In person he was tall and stout, with a large head, light brown hair, and blue eyes, had a strong, powerful voice; spoke slowly and distinctly with a heavy accent upon each word; walked slow, and never in a hurry; had great brain power; was courteous and dignified." He is interred in Section 19 along side of his wife, Eliza (Sands) Prentiss, who died Feb. 6, 1857. They had six children, but only three children living at the time of his death; two daughters and a son.
