He married Adelia Washburn in 1857. He served in the Civil War in 1862 (PVT CO K 105th Regiment Illinois Infantry). After discharge, he farmed in the Newton IA area for a time before moving to Missouri and then to eastern KS by 1870.
He was a pioneer resident of Fort Scott KS, and then moved to Rawlins Co KS in 1886 where he established a homestead claim.
In 1891 his wife Adelia died in Denver CO, and Ezra apparently moved around between mining in the mountains of Colorado and visiting his children back in northwest and eastern KS. In 1908 he came to the Phoenix AZ area to visit 2 of his children that had recently moved there, and died while there.

Family stories passed down (through his oldest grandchild Maggie) are that he claimed to be a descendant of Lord & Lady Carleton of England. The story said that Ezra was the 2nd born male of the Lord & Lady, and so came to the US since no inheritance would occur. Since we know Ezra D. has a grandfather named Ezra Carleton that was already in the US, those stories of being the 2nd born male to Lord & Lady must actually be about that grandfather.
Interestingly, stories passed from his aunt to her family has said they were descended from Sir Guy Carleton, governor of Brunswick.
The first one (Lord & Lady) is quite vague and hard to prove. The second one (Sir Guy) is doubtful since Sir Guy didn't marry until 1772, and Ezra Carleton is believed born in 1765/66 in Andover MA, and not listed in Sir Guy's offspring.
