John W. Besanceney, 78 formerly of Piqua, more recently of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, died on Tuesday March 25, 2003 at 1:00 pm in the Shady Side Hospital of Pittsburgh. He was born in Piqua on December 24, 1924 to the late Henry and Florence J. Lindsay Besanceney. He married Michelle E. Mancini on August 26, 1989 in Pittsburgh; and she survives.

Other survivors include five sons William Besanceney of Pittsburgh, John Besanceney of Maryland, Mark Besanceney of Virginia, Timothy Besanceney of Pittsburgh, Christian Besanceney of Lansing, Michigan, two daughters Mary Errand of Salem, Oregon, Jeanne Besanceney of San Francisco, four grandchildren, Jason Besanceney, Natalie Besanceney, Shari Besanceney, Christopher Errand, and three sisters Rose A. Larger, Winifred O'Keefe both of Piqua and Margaret Benkert of Ann Arbor, Michigan. He was preceded in death by a brother, Henry Besanceney, and three sisters, Florence Gallagher, Mary Albers, and Rita Smith.

Mr. Besanceney was a graduate of Piqua Catholic High School after which he served his country in the United States Army as a Sergeant during World War II. Upon returning home from the war, he obtained his Business Administration degree from the University of Dayton in 1950. He began what would be a long successful career in the Convention and Tourism industry. Initially he was with the Convention and Visitors Bureau in Cincinnati before being promoted to similar positions in Cleveland, Des Moines, Iowa, Saginaw Michigan, and eventually Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he was the former Executive Vice-President of the Pittsburgh Convention and Visitor's Bureau. He served as President of the International Association of Convention and Visitors Bureau. His engaging personality and love for people facilitated his success professionally and socially.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, March 29, 2003 at 10:30 am in St. Mary Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Thomas J. Grilliot as Celebrant. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 7:00-9:00 pm in the Jamieson & Yannucci Funeral Home where a prayer service will be conducted at 7:00 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P. O. Box 182039, Dept. O13, Columbus, OH 43218-2039.
