William Jeremiah Sheppard was born September 24, 1855, in Randolph County, AL, to John F. Sheppard and Mary Emaline Barnes Sheppard. On August 12, 1874, he married Louisa Priscilla Prather, and to this couple were born three children: Martha Frances E. Sheppard, William Bert Sheppard, and an unnamed infant. His wife Louisa died in 1879.
On December 28, 1882, he married Sarah “Sallie” Elizabeth Ussery and they became the parents of six children: George Franklin Sheppard, Madison Taylor Sheppard, Exer Anna Louisa Sheppard, Roxanna Sarah Sheppard, Rebecca Dovie Lou Sheppard, and Laura Docie Sheppard.
His primary occupation was farming, including growing cotton which he sold to local mills, but in 1889 he was ordained to the ministry and served Primitive Baptist churches in Randolph and Cleburne counties. These churches included Valley Grove Primitive Baptist Church near Wedowee, Macedonia Primitive Baptist Church near Ranburne, and Corinth Primitive Baptist Church also near Ranburne.
Early in 1916 he suffered a stroke which caused paralysis, and he died on August 7 of that year. He was buried at Fellowship Baptist Church Cemetery in Randolph County, AL.
