DEATH OF MRS. RACHEL MILLER

Mrs. Rachel Miller, a well known and highly respected resident of this city, passed away at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Delpha Thomas, in Malvern, Iowa, on Friday morning, March 21, 1911, at the age of 78 years, 5 months and 11 days, after an illness of a few weeks with a complication of troubles. She had been visiting in Malvern since last Christmas.

The remains were brought to Chariton Saturday evening and taken to Newbern where funeral services were held at the Union church on Sunday forenoon at 11 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Thompson, of Des Moines, after which interment took place in the Newbern cemetery by the side of her husband who died several years ago.

Rachel Webb was born in Decatur county, Indiana, on October 13, 1832. She was married there on July 26, 1852, to David Miller. To them were born seventeen children, seven of whom are living. Three boys and seven girls have passed away. Those who survive their mother are Mrs. W. C. Burkhart, of Edina, Mo., Mrs. J. P. Erickson, of Sidney, Mont., Mrs. G. W. Harp, of this city, Mrs. A. M. Starr, of Hastings, Iowa, Mrs. J. W. Ballard, of Caldwell, Idaho, Will and Millard Miller, of Des Moines.

In 1867 the family moved to Knox county, Mo., where they lived sixteen years and then came to Iowa, locating in English township, this county. About twenty years ago they moved to Chariton, which has since been the family home.

For over fifty years Mrs. Miller has been a faithful and devoted member of the Christian church, and was a grand, good woman, ever rendering a helping hand to those about her. She possessed a kind disposition and had a smile and friendly word for all. She was devoted to her family and friends, who will ever cherish her memory. The sorrowing children who survive will have the deep sympathy of the community.
