"Died, April 15th, 1923, Mrs. Sophia E. Blodgett, widow of T. S. Blodgett, M. D. Born December 16th, 1833. She was a great lover of nature. From childhood, a yearly visitor to this place, and for sixty-two years a constant resident. The above notice was written by Mrs. Sophia E. Blodgett, in May, 1922, and is published exactly as she worded it. Mrs. Blodgett wrote two obituaries, at that time, to be given to the Cooperstown newspapers, the one above being given to this publication. Mrs. Sophia Elizabeth Blodgett was born in Morristown, Jefferson county, December 16, 1833, daughter of James M. Stocking, of Utica, and Katherine Metcalf, who was the daughter of Judge William Metcalf, of Cooperstown. Mrs. Blodgett was a great granddaughter of Elihu Phinney, one of the earliest settlers of this part of the country. Mr. Phinney came to Cooperstown, with his family, January 5, 1795. On October 10, 1860, Mrs. Blodgett married Thomas Spencer Blodgett, M. D., of this village. Dr. Blodgett, who was a native of Jerico, Vt., died here, September 23, 1900. Sophia E. Blodgett was well known in this village and was truly beloved. For many years she sang in the choir of the Presbyterian church. She was a great lover of music, of flowers and of nature. Surviving are three children, Thomas S. Blodgett, Grace and George L., all of Cooperstown, and one brother, Samuel S. Stocking, of Atlanta, Ga. The funeral was held privately from her late home, Tuesday at 2:30 p. m. The Rev. Edward C. Petrie officiated and interment was made in Lakewood Cemetery."
