Martha Nell Anderson, age 87, of Mayfield, KY passed away, Saturday, November 8, 2014, at Heritage Manor in Mayfield.

Martha Nell was a life-long member of
First Presbyterian Church and served on
its Session. She also was a former
member of the Board of Directors of the
Mayfield-Graves County Animal Shelter, the Food Pantry Board, and the American Association of University Women (AAUW). She also was a member of the Mayfield-Graves County Retired Teachers’ Association.

A graduate of Murray State University, she was a retired educator, having taught English for 35 years in Illinois, Graves County (Wingo), and Mayfield High School.

She is survived by a nephew, Steve (Betsy) Anderson of Frankfort, KY, two great nephews, Matthew Stevens Anderson and Jack Taylor Anderson, and several distant cousins. Her special caregivers during her final months were Cora Stubblefield, Shannon Brandon, and Tara Burgess.

Martha Nell was preceded in death by her parents, Jess Grider and Lura Lewis Anderson, and by a brother, Jack Stevens Anderson.

Jess was Editor of the Mayfield Messenger and Jack was Sports Editor of both the Messenger and the Paducah Sun.

Martha Nell was the last surviving member of her branch of one of Mayfield’s pioneer families. Her great great grandfather was John Anderson, credited with founding the town of Mayfield. Her great grandfather, Ervin Anderson, born in Graves County in 1820, served as Graves County Court Clerk and as Representative in the Kentucky General Assembly. Her grandfather was Albert Sidney Anderson, a former Mayor of Mayfield in 1909-1910. Her home, on North 6th Street, is the oldest standing in the city, having been built in the early 1850s by her great grand uncle, Congressman Lucian Anderson.

Funeral services for Martha Nell will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, November 13, 2014, at Byrn Funeral Home in Mayfield with Dr. Jerry Mayes officiating. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Berry Craig III, Bobby Fisher, Johnny Jackson, Ron N. Mays, Richard Suiter, and Tyrone Wilson.
Friends are invited to call at the Byrn Funeral Home from noon until the funeral hour on Thursday.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of a contribution to the Mayfield-Graves County Animal Shelter or the First Presbyterian Church Building Fund.
