Melvin Carrol Barta, 74, died Tuesday, March 28, 2006, at the Fort Meade VA Hospital.

Visitation will be noon until 9 pm on Sunday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis and will resume Monday one hour prior to services.

Funeral services will be 1 pm Monday April 3, 2006, at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis, with Chaplain Charley Conger officiating. Burial with military honors, provided by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard, will be at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

A memorial has been established to Hospice of the Northern Hills.

Melvin Barta was born Aug. 2, 1931, at Overton, Neb., to Ludvick Charles and Leona Mable (Fox) Barta. He moved near Burwell, Neb., at an early age and attended school there. He started riding bulls in the late 1940's and traveled the rodeo circuit as a member of the RCA.

Melvin was drafted and served in the U.S. Army in the 50's. After his honorable discharge, he returned home and moved to Fort Pierre, where he operated heavy equipment in the construction of the Oahe Dam.

On June 29, 1963, he married Rita Gregg in Sturgis. The couple lived in Sturgis and Melvin worked for the Sturgis Water Company. During the early 70's he worked for a ditching company in Rapid City. He operated heavy equipment during his years working for American Colloid Company near Belle Fourche. Melvin retired after working for several years at the open cut gold mine in Lead.

During his retirement he enjoyed bowling and bowled for several teams in Sturgis and Spearfish. He was a member of the Sturgis VFW and enjoyed dancing. Melvin always liked hiking, hunting, fishing and four wheeling.

Survivors include his children and their families; Cindy Dennis and her husband Robert, Red Owl, Cathy Morris and her husband Gordie, Sturgis, Brenda Barta, Long Beach, Calif., Susan Baldwin and her husband Dale, Sturgis, Debbie Barta, Box Elder, Leeann Barta, Sturgis; three brothers, Dewayne Barta and his wife Shirley, Taylor, Neb., Dale Barta and his wife Sherril, Burwell, Neb., Larry Barta and his wife Deanna, Elyria, Neb.; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three sisters and one grandson.
