The death of E. Ogden Ross, native Trojan and prominent attorney and churchman, occurred last midnight at his home, 212 Pauling Avenue, following a short illness. Mr. Ross was in his 72nd year, having been born in this city February 5, 1856, son of Elias and Mary E. White Ross. For more than half a century he had been prominently identified in the civic and public life of Troy.

Mr. Ross received his early education at the Troy Academy, leaving that school to attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In 1874 upon the death of his father, he left the Institute after two years of study and obtained position in the office of the City Engineer, and in the following year became an employee in the City Comptroller’s office, serving until 1886 when he was promoted to the position of Chief Clerk and was made Secretary of the Board of Contract and Supply. In the meantime he took up the study of law. at the same time retaining his city position, and on September 13, 1888, he was admitted to the New York bar at Saratoga Springs. He resigned his position with the city February 3, 1903, and since then devoted himself to he profession, in which he made rapid strides and soon became highly regarded. In June 1876 Mr. Ross enlisted in the Sixth Separate Company, Troy Citizens Corps.

Mr. Ross was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Since 1903 he had been an Elder of the congregation and prepared a history of the church. He was a member of the Rensselaer County Bar Association, (and many other organizations).

The Survivors: November 14, 1888, Mr. Ross married Jennie M. Neely, the daughter of William Neely, who conducted a wholesale boot and shoe business in New York. She survives , as do two sons, Rev. Dr. William Neely Ross of Nack and Major Ogden J. Ross of the First Battalion, 105th Infantry, of this city; three sisters, the Misses Emily, May W. and Jessie C. Ross all of this city, and three grandchildren, Charles Terry Ross and William Ogden Ross of Nyack, and Ogden Cheney Ross of this city.

The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock from the First Presbyterian Church, Rev. Dr. Henry R. Freeman, pastor of St. John’s Episcopal Church will officiate.
