He and his mother Ibbie were both killed in an auto accident near Diboll in Angelina County, Texas, on their back from his mother's medical appointment in Houston.

His wife, Pauline, was born 17 Sep 1900 in Dallam County, Texas, and died 23 Feb 1998 in Lufkin. She had been a resident of Lufkin since 1931, per her death notice which stated that no services were planned pursuant to her wishes. She was survived by a nephew, Leo Fears, of Whittier, California.
