The son of John D. Abernethy and Susan Maria Forney. Susan was the sister of Revolutionary soldier Peter Forney and the daughter of Jacob Forney and Maria Bergner. John D., was the son of David Abernethy and Martha Ann Tuner.

Miles was born in North Carolina and was a member of the legislature from Lincoln County, NC, in 1831-33. He married Ann Hoke, daughter of Daniel Hoke and Barbara Ramsour.

Daniel Hoke left North Carolina around 1834 or 1835 with his wife and a son, daughters, and sons-in-law and moved to Alabama. Miles Washington Abernethy and his wife must have still been living in North Carolina in December 1836, as their daughter Sarah Catherine is interred there. Miles' father, John D. Abernethy, died June 1843 and is interred in the same cemetery as the child Sarah Catherine.

Miles and Ann were living in Jacksonville, Calhoun County, Alabama, by at least December 1846, as their child died then and is interred in the Jacksonville City Cemetery. Miles served several terms as an Alabama state senator.
