After more than four decades as an aerospace engineer at Tinker Air Force Base, working on several weapon systems, he decided to retire and take up the life of a farmer. Larry completed course work and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in aerospace engineering from The University of Oklahoma.
Larry was assigned to work on B-52’s, as an aerodynamics analysis. Within a couple of years he was assigned to U-Tapao Air Force Base in Thailand, where he designed repairs for B-52’s damaged in bombing raids over Vietnam. At one point he was sent to Egypt on a job for the Air Force. He ignored advice not to jump in the polluted Nile River, and did so anyway. He contracted some sort of parasite, and spent 11 days in the hospital.
In 1998 Larry was accepted by NATO to work in Belgium, as an on-site AWACS engineer at Supreme Headquarters, Allied Powers in Europe (SHAPE). He returned to Tinker in 2004 after six and a half years in Europe.
During his career at Tinker he has preformed engineering work on T-38’s, F-4’s, KC-135’s, AIR FORCE ONE, C-5’s, F111’s, F-16’s, E-3 Sentrys and B-52’s. The lifelong bachelor raised Black Angus steer on a ranch he bought near Holdenville.
Larry enjoyed volunteer work at Children’s Hospital, Big Brother Program, Salvation Army, and The Teen Hotline. He also was a loving caregiver to his mother.
Survivors include, his mother, Leonne Tarrant of Edmond; three sisters, Tressa Coffman and partner Daniel Waterman of Edmond, Sherry Ficken and husband Vernon of Edmond, and Elaine Coonfield and husband Kenneth of Crescent. He is preceded in death by his father Edward Harland Tarrant.
Graveside services will be 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at South Marshall Lions Cemetery with Pastor Mark LeMarr officiating. Services are under the direction of Abernathy Aaron Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers the family request memorial donations be made to the Children’s Hospital in Oklahoma City.
