Holland Ross Cokeley, 87, of Washington, died Monday, November 10, 2014, in Presbyterian Senior Care.

He was born April 15, 1927, in Cairo, West Virginia, a son of Harry Cokeley and Willa Ross Cokeley.

A graduate of Washington High School, Mr. Cokeley served in the Army from February 27, 1946, until his honorable discharge as a Technician, 5th grade, on September 17, 1947. For his service, he was awarded the World War II Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal – Germany.

He worked for 33 years at RCA in Meadowlands, retiring as superintendent of manufacturing. In addition, he also worked in retail sales at Ace Sporting Goods.

Mr. Cokeley was a member of Fairhill Manor Christian Church, the US Constabulary Association, American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175, and Boy Scouts of America. His affiliation with the Boy Scouts of America started in 1961, when he served as a cub master of a pack in New Jersey. In 1963, due to a job relocation, he began a 20-year history with scouting in the Catawba District. Initially affiliating as an assistant scoutmaster with Troop 10, Mr. Cokeley’s service included troop committee member, explorer post organizer, district camping chairman, district vice chairman, district chairman, district membership chairman and district advancement chairman. For his service to the Boy Scouts of American, he was awarded the Cub Scout Leader Training Award, Boy Scout Leader Training Award, the Catawba District’s Scouter of the Year Award in 1971, the Catawba District Award of Merit in 1971, and the Silver Beaver Award, which was presented to him in 1983 by the Allegheny Trails Council.

In addition, Mr. Cokeley was an instructor of rifle safety courses and was affiliated with Junior Achievement.

On January 12, 1951, he married Alice Bainbridge, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Jeffrey H. Cokeley (Susan) of Byron, New York and David B. Cokeley (Rebecca) of Leesburg, Virginia; a daughter, Patricia L. Young of Waterford, Michigan; a brother, Calvin Cokeley (Margaret) of Washington; nine grandchildren, Karen Cokeley, Emily (Kevin) Curran, Robert Cokeley, Peter Young, Holly Young, Allison Young, Benjamin Cokeley, Sarah Cokeley and Taylor Cokeley; and a great-grandchild, Walker H. Cokeley.

Deceased is a son, Mark R. Cokeley.

Friends will be received Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, November 14th, with Rev. Michael Lehman officiating. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded graveside by American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175.
