Ben Abels, 87, died Tuesday in Hilltop Care Center in Spirit Lake following a six-week illness. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Boothby Funeral Home. The Rev. Warren Paige will officiate. There will be a family prayer service at 1:45 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The body was cremated. Mr. Abels was born Jan. 31, 1898, at Flanagan, 111. He was married to Marian Culp on Dec. 24, 1925, at Paullina. He farmed southeast of Cherokee until 1965 and later moved into Cherokee. Mr. Abels lived in Spirit Lake for three years. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Gale Abels, Boulder, Colo., and Gordon Abels, Storm Lake; one daughter, Mrs. Henry (Janice) Lawrence, Denver, Colo.; one foster son, James Anderson, Spencer; 12 grandchildren, and 1 greatgrandson. He was preceded in death by a grandson1, Ben, three brothers and one sister.
