Harry James (Jimmy) Guist was born in Apollo, PA, on March 25, 1922, and passed away Monday, November 19, 2007, in the Aultman Hospital. His family moved to Canton, Ohio when he was 3 years old. He attended Cherry and Gibbs elementary schools, Central High School and graduated from McKinley High School, where he was captain of the state champion swimming team and a certified All- American Swimmer. He was a hook-up man at Republic Steel, then a machinist at Westinghouse Naval Ordinance Plant, prior to training as a pilot in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He became a life Disabled American Veteran in 1944. He attended the University of Alabama, Kent State University and graduated from Western Reserve University Dental School as a Doctor of Dental Surgery, in 1949. He served an internship with the Ohio Public Health Dept., and then enjoyed 42 years as a private dental practitioner in the city of Canton. As a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, he headed the committees for the promotion of the city income tax and the drive for a new city hall for Canton. He was a president of the Jaycees, chairman and developer of Canton's Mother Gooseland, a vice president of the Ohio Jaycees and was voted as Canton's Outstanding Young Man in 1958. He was an honorary Senator of Junior Chamber International. He served 14 continuous years as Councilman of the former 6th Ward in Canton and as vice president, majority leader and minority leader of Canton City Council. He served many terms as president of the Western Canton Republican Club which later became the Greater Canton Republican Club, and in 1989 was declared an Outstanding Volunteer of the Stark County Republican Organization. As president of the Aquatic Association, he was the promoter of the C.T. Branin Natatorium where national events have been held. He was a certified swimming official of the Ohio State Athletic Assoc., Y.M.C.A. National Organization and A.A.U. He was a board member of the Amateur Sports Hall of Fame and enshrined in the Swimming Hall of Fame in 1988. His name is listed on the Wall of Fame at the McKinley Presidential Library and Museum. He also received the highest award for volunteers given by the Stark County Republican Party and was awarded a life time Achievement Award. He was a member and served as a Deacon and Trustee on the council of Trinity Lutheran Church as well as Sunday School Superintendent, teacher and was head of the usher teams. He received a Certificate of Appreciation for faithful service in 1981. He was president of the P.T.A. organizations at Baxter, Harter and Souers schools as well as the Lincoln High School Band Parents Club. Other offices held were president of Canton Recreation, March of Dimes in Northeastern Ohio, Canton Ex-News Boys, as chairman of the Y.M.C.A. youth board and aquatic committee and vice president of the Musicians Union Community Band, and a member of the Boy Scouts of America Buckeye Council Executive Board. As a member of Canton Rotary Club, he was instrumental in raising funds for renovation of a Girl Guide/Scout World Center in Pune, India and of Baer Hospital in Chirala, India with the help of the local Rotary Clubs there. He provided dental equipment for a dental office in Annapolis, Brazil. He has received three Paul Harris Fellow awards. In 1989 he became an Honorary Life Member of National Dental Society, Ohio State Dental Society and Stark County Dental Society and was a member of the Charter Class of Inductees to the Distinguished Dental Service Academy in 2000. At one time he was president of the Canton Dental Society and was honored by the Ohio State Dental Society as the "Outstanding Dentist of the Year" in 1987. He was chairman of a successful drive for fluoridated water in Canton. His hobby was doing "magic" and children all over the world have enjoyed the magic of his "Happy Penny". He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ryllis (Gnagy) Guist of the home; five children: Connie Guist of Lake Oswego, OR., Patty Guist and Beth Hartman of Louisville, KY., Judy Guist of Portland, OR., Harry (Vicki) Guist of Arvada, CO, and Bill (Connie) Guist of Strongsville, OH. There are eleven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Fonner in the Canton area. There will be calling hours at the REED FUNERAL HOME NORTH CANTON CHAPEL, 801 Pittsburg Ave. N.W., North Canton on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A private graveside service, for the family, will be held in West Lawn Cemetery.
