Margo began dancing for Cugat's band when she was 9 years old. Their graves, except for Xavier, may be viewed in the photo at right.

During the same year Mother married Michael Lehmaier, she began having serious problems.
On July 28, 1896, Eva's brother and protector, Charles Alexander Johnson, shot her 2nd husband, Michael Louis Lehmaier, while protecting and defending his sister against Michael's crazed, morphine addicted, abusive and violent behavior. They had been married since Feb 1896. At 3 am July 28, 1896, Michael attempted to break down his wife's door despite her brother's warnings that he was armed and would shoot. Michael threw himself against the locked door, breaking the bolt of the lock, and causing the door to burst open. He was shot and died of his wounds three days later. Earlier in the month, Eva, while under police protection, had to jump out her 2nd or 3rd story window (face bloody, swollen and scratched; hair puller out in clumps) to escape further harm from her frenzied husband. Crazed Michael followed her out the window in violent pursuit. After a struggle, the police officer assigned to protect Eva, restrained and arrested him. The police had fallen short in answering Eva's months-long pleas for legal action and protection, which resulted finally in Michael's death.
