PEARL HARBOR SURVIVOR

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Richard Lee Boyer. He was surrounded by love and family members as he slipped the surly bonds of earth and danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings.

He touched the face of God as he left his wife of almost 60 years, Minnie, his loving daughter, Linda Roland (Carl), granddaughter Mindy Brookshire (Peyton) from Billings, MT, grandson Rick Roland Boyer (Kathy) of Fresno, CA, step-grandson Eric Roland (Tracie) from Keller, TX, and step-grandson Kurt Roland (Tracy) of Denair, CA, great grandchildren Hannah and Owen Brookshire, Kaelan and Brennan Boyer, Jarred, Jordan, Dalton, and Emily Roland.

Richard was preceded in death by son James Lee Boyer and parents James Jackson and Bessie Boyer, stepmother Grace Boyer, and sister, Rosalie Barron.

Richard was born in Chicago, IL. He grew up in Freeport, IL.

He fell in love and married Minnie Ruby Hoefle on June 8, 1946.

Richard enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp on September 3, 1940 and was serving as a parachute rigger at Hickam Field on December 7, 1941 when the Japanese Forces struck Pearl Harbor. Upon returning to the mainland, he trained and became an instructor aerial gunner in B-29s. When the air refueling concept using modified KB-29 boom tankers was developed, he became one of the first boom operators, and served in that capacity in KC-97 and KC-135 aircraft until his retirement as a Master Sergeant, U.S. Air Force at Castle AFB, CA on September 7, 1960.

After his retirement from military service, Richard built a small almond ranch in Atwater, CA and went to work at the Dept. of Motor Vehicles as a driver's license examiner, retiring again in 1977.

Upon his last retirement he supported his wife Minnie in the operation of the family realty business.

He loved to bowl and do RV traveling.

He was a member of Chapter 10 of the Pearl Harbor Survivor's Association, Evangelical Free Church, Inflight Refueler's Association, Merced Elks Lodge #1240 B.P.O.E., American Legion Post 83, VFW, Life member of Castle Air Museum, and most recently UC Merced Chancellor's Associates.

One of his most thrilling moments was to have his picture taken with the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Richard Myers in Honolulu, HI at the 60th Reunion of the Pearl Harbor Survivors.

One thing that amazed him and was most pleasing to him, was that his daughter would marry a Colonel in the U.S. Air Force who piloted the same tanker aircraft he flew and could swap many a war story with him.

Richard was a dedicated, flag-flying American who served his country to the end, but he will be remembered most as the best Dad in the whole wide world, wonderful grandpa, and proud great grandpa.

He was a gentle soul, yet he had a most determined spirit.

The family wishes to extend their appreciation to Doctors Adrian, Roy, Mani, and Patel for their valiant effort in Richard's final days and for the TLC of the nursing staffs on 2 West and 3 North at Mercy Community Campus. A special thanks to Molly Hernandez for her dedicated and loving support.

Funeral service will be at 3:00 p.m. at the Evangelical Free Church located at 2876 G Street, Merced, Ca on Friday, April 7, 2006.

Pastor Steve Muncherian will officiate.

Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park.

Anyone wishing to make donations in his honor may do so, to the Evangelical Free Church or the Castle Air Museum.

Arrangements are under the direction of Stratford Evans Merced Funeral Home.
