He was a resident of New Hope, AL and was preceded in death by his parents George B Butler and Marilee Dilworth Butler of New Hope, sister, Annie Louise Butler of Indianapolis, Indiana, and wife of 51 years, Lorraine Mynatt Butler of New Hope.

George served in the Navy during WWII. He graduated with a BS from Auburn University and received a MS from the University of Oklahoma. He worked as an Engineer at Allis Chalmers and was part of the team that developed the first mechanical cotton picker. He worked at NASA for 26 years where he held the position of Head of Quality and Assurance and worked on several projects including the Apollo program and the Space Shuttle. He also worked on the investigation committee into the Challenger accident. Afterwards he worked as a consultant to the Space industry until his retirement in 1994. He was a resident of New Hope for almost all of his life.

Services will be held at New Hope Funeral Home Chapel, Saturday at 11:00 AM with burial in the Maple Hill Cemetery.
