Bernice was born in El Paso, Illinois to Michael P. and Mary B. (Krones) Corbitt.

The Corbitts moved to Iowa, and Bernice met Andrew.

Andrew Jensen and Bernice Corbitt were married September 27, 1923 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. They were blessed with four children.

In 1930 she, her husband and two children were living in Bessie Armstrong's boarding house in Council Bluffs, where he was a manager at a department store. Their children, Helen (6) and Leona (2 yrs 3 mos) were both born in Iowa and listed in the 1930 US Census.

The Great Depression hit, and sometime after 1935 Andrew headed for California, leaving his wife and 4 children behind in Iowa. He later died, March 29, 1976 in Ventura, California.

By 1940, Bernice and 4 children were living at 820 East Erie St, Missouri Valley, Iowa. The 1940 US Census lists Bernice (37), Ellen (16), Leona (12), Bonnie Jean (7), Jerry (5), and Martin (3). Bernice and Andrew were still married, though he wasn't living there, and she reported income from other sources (Andrew may have been sending money home, or her parents may have been helping financially. She had no outside job or income of her own at Census time).

In applying for their own Social Security or Railroad benefits, some of their children only listed Bernice as their parent, and some listed both Andrew and Bernice.
