John E. Allen was born in Jonkjopnings lan near Bruseholm, Sweden. At the age of twelve years he came to America with his parents, settling in Chicago. From there he went to Carver, then to Cokato, Minn., where he was in business for over thirteen years. From there he went to Minneapolis, then to Willmar. He enlisted in the army and served faithfully during the Civil War. He was a private of Capt. B. P. Schulers, Company H, 9 regiment of the Minnesota Infantry Volunteer and was honorably discharged from service in August 1865 at Fort Snelling, Minn. He came to Brandon about twenty-six or seven years ago where he was interested in a store. He was married at Brandon, Minn., to Miss Wilhelmina Peterson, April 4, 1887. He was a respected citizen and friends at Brandon still remember "Pa Allen." In 1892 he moved his family to Alexandria where he has since resided. The last fourteen years he has lived on the shores at Lake Victoria where he has made a comfortable home. Besides his wife he is survived by six children, two sons and four daughters. They are, Mrs. V. E. Skoglund of Lake Mary, Albert W., Johnnie E., Lillian M., Ida E. and Emma M. who are at home, and one daughter Miss Clara Allen of Willmar, Minn., by a former marriage. Mr. Allen was at one time a member of the G. A. R. Post of this city. He was a kind and generous gentleman and was never so happy as when helping the poor and unfortunate ones. No one left his home hungry. He was a kind father and always tried to keep his family in good circumstances. He had been ill for a year and was confined to his bed two weeks before his death. He was conscious to the last and prayed to go. He called his family to his bedside and bade them good bye. He told them he was ready and glad to go home to his God and maker. The funeral was Friday, Nov. 29, 1912. Interment was in Geneva Cemetery. Funeral services were held at the home Friday afternoon at two o'clock by Rev. Tindal. The pallbearers were C. F. Lamberg, A. Thompson, J. A. McKay, J. Olson, Peter Larson and Lundlie.
