The family of Edward Hagopian is mourning his passing, at the age of 91 years, after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Hagopian was born to Calust and Dushkoon Hagopian, who were among the first Armenian immigrants to settle in the San Joaquin Valley to escape persecution by the Turks in their homeland. His original family home was in the old Armenian section of Fresno, close to where the Holy Trinity Armenian Apostolic Church still stands. He was one of six siblings, which included his brothers, Nick, Kay, Harry, and Lee – and his sister, Barbara. His parents moved the family to Biola, in 1917, where they made their home on a 20-acre vineyard. It was there that Mr. Hagopian, along with his siblings, grew up and played. Mr. Hagopian graduated with the Class of 1930 from Kerman High School.

Mr. Hagopian worked in canneries around the San Joaquin Valley and the San Francisco area and had employment on various farms, as well as a position as a truck driver. In 1940, his brother and he began farming together in the Rolinda district of Fresno, on a 40-acre vineyard that they were able to purchase.

He served in the U.S. Army, in North Africa and Italy. He was discharged from the army in 1945. In 1947, he met Margaret Gagosian, of Fresno, and they married in the Holy Trinity Armenian Church, on January 3rd, 1948. It was also in 1948 that Mr. Hagopian and his brother, Lee, bought a farm in Ripperdan district of Madera County. Later on that year, he and his wife were blessed with their first child, a daughter, Carol Joy, born in December. Carol's birth was followed, in 1950, by the birth of Mr. Hagopian's first son, Philip Edward. A second son, Rodney Allan, was born to the family in 1955.

Mr. Hagopian and his wife, Margaret, moved their family home to Madera, in March of 1959. He and Lee continued to expand their farming operation, until Lee's untimely death in 1979. Mr. Hagopian continued to farm with his son, Rodney, and in 1983 he was joined in the business by his son, Philip.

Mr. Hagopian enjoyed gardening and was an avid vegetable gardener. He was a past member of the Madera Elks Lodge, and in his later years, he was a member of an informal group of old, Armenian friends, who would get together for monthly lunches to share fellowship.

Mr. Hagopian was also blessed with two, fine grandsons – Joel Dennis Stearns, born in 1978, and Aram Alexander Hagopian, born in 1999.

Mr. Hagopian was preceded in death by his brothers, Nick, Kay, Harry, and Lee – and by his daughter, Carol Joy Stearns. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Margaret, his sister, Barbara Peters, of Fowler, his sons, Philip and Rodney, and his grandsons, Joel Stearns and Aram Hagopian, all of Madera. He is also survived by his son-in-law, Dennis Stearns, of Madera, and his daughter-in-law, Carolanne Hagopian, also of Madera.
