John attended school through 8th grade and was a farmhand on his parent’s farm until, at age 21, he married 20 year old Mildred Adele Eads on August 21, 1902, in Clinton, Iowa. Millie was then living with her parents across the Mississippi River in Albany, Illinois, having arrived from New York in about 1894.
By 1910 John, Millie, and their three children (Miles, Clarence, and Ester) were living in a house they rented in Newton Township and farming. In November of 1917, John’s 14 year old son, Miles died after being shot by his own rifle when it discharged after falling to the floor of the buggy he was driving. Adding to that tragedy, two of John’s other children (2 year old Ada and 10 month old James) would parish two weeks apart in May 1921 – likely from diphtheria.
In 1918, when he registered for the WWI draft, John and family were living in a house they rented in rural Albany Township and farming. By 1925 they had moved into a rented house in Albany Village but were still farming. They would live in Albany Village for the remainder of their lives.
John & Millie had eight children in 20 years:
