Barnstable John A. Brewin, 84, a World War II Merchant Marine veteran and professional football player, died January 17, 1998 at the Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Community-Manor, Hyannis, after a brief illness.

He was the husband of Mary P. (Curley) Brewin.

Mr. Brewin was born in Everett. He was a graduate of St. Bonaventure University in New York.

During the 1937-1938 season, he played professional football for the Boston Shamrocks.

Mr. Brewin served in the Merchant Marine during World War II and, in 1950, moved to Middletown, N.J., where he was a self-employed printing supplies salesman.

In 1983, he retired and moved to Barnstable. He was an avid football fan, enjoyed golf and was a volunteer "gleaner" for local homeless shelters, delivering food to pantries and the Salvation Army.

Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Mary Anne Brewin of Barnstable; two sons, John A. Brewin Jr. of Newburyport and Peter J. Brewin of Lafayette, Calif.; a brother, Austin Brewin of Nahant; a sister, Margaret Breen of Lynnfield and three grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated January 21 in Our Lady of Hope Chapel, West Barnstable. Burial was in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Centeville.
