1853 - Birth and Baptism
Oluf was born on May 28, 1853, at the farm, called Gammelmoen, of his parents, Engebret Olson and Andrea Hansdatter. Most Norwegians at that time still used the patronymic surname system: Engebret's father was Ole Eriksen, so Engebret's was Engebret Olson ("son of" Ole). Oluf was therefore Oluf Engebretson. These patronyms were also spelled Olsen and Engebretsen, as well as Embretsen (Embret was a contraction of Engebret).
Oluf was baptized five months after he was born, on October 28, 1853.
1865 Norway Census
In the 1865 Census, Oluf' s family was still living at the farm called Gammelmoen. Oluf's father Embret was listed as head of household and co-owned the farm with his unmarried younger brother Syver. Embret's parents (Ole Eriksen and Marte Engbretsdatter) also lived there.
Embret's unmarried sister Oline (born 1834) also lived at the farm, and was listed as a tjenestepige (female servant or employee). Also listed as a servant or employee was Anne Olsdatter (born 1849). I do not know whether Anne was related to the family.
Oluf now had four younger siblings: Marthea, Emil, Hans and Oline. (Oline was my maternal great-grandmother.)

Oluf's youngest sibling, Otto, was born in May 1870, and by that time the family no longer lived at Gammelmoen but were lodgers at a farm called Skjærbæk.
Oluf's mother Andrea died four months after Otto was born, and Oluf's father Embreg died six months after Andrea, in March 1871. Oluf was 17 at the time and had six younger siblings; the youngest was still an infant. The seven children went to live in different households.
1882 Emigration to the United States
When Oluf was 29, he emigrated to the United States, arriving in Philadelphia May 24, 1882, on the SS Indiana. On October 30, 1884, he filed a Statement of Intent to naturalize as a U.S. citizen in Shawano County, Wisconsin. An "Olif Engebrightsen" is recorded as becoming a U.S. citizen on March 30, 1885, so perhaps that is his record.
Oluf returned to Norway sometime before October 1887, and then came back to the United States with his unmarried sister Oline and her three-month old son Einar on the S.S. Geiser on October 14, 1887. The passenger list states Oluf was already a U.S. citizen, and that Oluf and Oline are still using the patronymic surname "Engebretsen."
In adapting to their new country, both Oluf and Oline later started using their father's patronymic surname Olson, which would have been easier to spell than their own (Engebretsen).
1888 Marriage
On July 15, 1888, Oluf married Marie Christine Olson at the First Lutheran Church in Wittenberg, Shawano County, Wisconsin. I posted a picture of their marriage record from the U.S. Evangelical Church Records (theirs is the last record on the page). The ceremony was performed by Rev. Even Johnson Homme (Find a Grave Memorial 73170676), who was the founder of nearby Wittenberg.

At the time of the 1900 census, Oluf and Marie Olson were living in Birnamwood, Shawano County, Wisconsin. Oluf was a farmer and their home was mortgaged rather than owned outright. The census shows that they had no biological children but had an adopted son named Alex. Alex was born in August 1879 and was 20 years old at the time of the 1900 census.
At present, I do not know what happened to Oluf, his wife Marie, and their adopted son Alex, but I am continuing my research and will add to these notes when I have more information.
