L. Jean Artman-Ruiz, 86, formerly of Pittsburgh, passed away at Woodlands at Austinwoods, Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014. Jean was born March 8, 1928 in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late William and Loretta (Mundy) Artman. She was one of 11 children and was preceded in death by her six brothers, William, James, Edward, Robert, Raymond and Bruce; and two sisters, Crystal Denryter and Anna Marie Santa Maria. Jean dedicated 27 years to the Order of Saint Francis as a sister and was formerly known as Sister Marie Bernard, O.S.F, as an educator in the Catholic schools in Pittsburgh and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Jean received her Bachelor of English from Duquesne University and her Master of Education from the University of Puerto Rico. She also spent many years as an educator with the Army, teaching at Fort Buchanan Army Base, San Juan, Puerto Rico and also at the University of Puerto Rico. Jean loved her family and especially enjoyed spending summers, Christmases and special occasions with them in the states. Jean will be sadly missed by her husband, Edwin Ruiz-Rivera; her sister, Margaret N. Hochendoner, of Lake Milton, Ohio; brother, Bernard C. Artman, of Pittsburgh; and her many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews. Family and friends may pay their respects from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, 2014, at Our Lady of the Lakes Parish, St. Catherine Church, Lake Milton, Ohio, where a Mass of Christian burial will follow at 1 p.m., with the Rev. David Merzweiler officiating. Interment will be at St. John Vianney Catholic Cemetery, St. Georges Section, Pittsburgh. Arrangements are being handled by HIGGINS-REARDON FUNERAL HOMES, North Jackson Chapel.
