Col Henry M. Henington, age 92, died of natural causes on October 29, 2014, in San Antonio, Texas.
Henry was born December 25, 1921 in Mexia, Texas to parents Bud Henry Henington and Lucile Scranton. He attended the University of Texas to study petroleum engineering. When his father died of a heart attack at age forty-nine he returned to be with his mother and brother and attended the University of Houston. Henry was attending college and working for Hughes Tool Co. when Pearl Harbor was attacked. He and three other friends walked immediately to the courthouse and enlisted in the Army Air Corps.
He was commissioned in November 1942 and ordered to the first B17 transition class in Hobbs New Mexico. In 1942 Henry also married his high school sweetheart, Katherine Dunn. After surviving and completing 25 missions he continued his career in the Air Force and was promoted to Colonel in 1959.
After 30 years, Henry retired from the USAF and purchased a ranch in Seguin, Texas where he owned and operated the Double H Quarter Horse Ranch. He bred, trained, and showed horses until 1996 when he and Katherine sold the ranch and moved to Air Force Village II. He continued to boarder horses near the village and rode and trained yearlings well into his 80's.
Col Henington was a social, active man who was deeply involved in his church, family and especially his grandchildren. His family and friends will always remember him as the cowboy.
He is survived by his one son, one daughter, two grandchildren and his brother. Henry was proceeded in death by his wife, Katherine Henington.
