She favored service via the nursing profession, working at Hillman Jefferson Hospital (now known as UAB Medical Center) and at South Highland Hospital. She retired as a nurse in 1993 after 33 years. She married Herman Maxwell Sr. and had chidren Vivian Elaine and Herman R. Maxwell, Jr. She later married Ransom Smith, Jr., and with him had five children, Roger, Anthony, Yvonne, Pamela, and Ransom III. Her passing came at the Princeton Baptist Medical Center.
