Joanne grew up at Kelly Lake, Wisconsin, attended Oconto Falls High School, graduated from Elgin Academy, Elgin Illinois and earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, in 1947. She taught public school music in Aurora, Illinois, Stow, Ohio and was a substitute teacher for the Suring, Wisconsin, School district.
While living in Illinois, Joanne continued to study voice for 10 years in Chicago, was a soloist in churches, concerts, recitals, and taught private voice lessons. She enjoyed learning to play a variety of stringed folk instruments.
Joanne was proud to have served as Secretary of the Community Memorial Hospital Auxiliary in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, for many years, volunteering thousands of hours in the hospital. She also donated many hours as a Braille transcriber for the blind while living in Ohio.
Joanne was a member of Pilgrim United Church of Christ, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, but attended Hickory United Methodist Church, Hickory, Wisconsin.
Joanne is survived by her daughter, Rebecca (Karl) Fabry; her niece, Jill Ellis; her grandchildren, Steve, Kate, Tiffany, and Mark.
Joanne was preceded in death by her husband, parents, her brother John T. Ellis II, sister Kay Ellis Burton, brother Edward R. Ellis and nephew John T. Ellis III.
Her memorial service was held at Hickory United Methodist Church on Monday, August 1, 2011. Jones Funeral Service in Oconto Falls served the Alley family.
