MRS. HERBERT J. RUSSELL DEATH CONCLUDES LINGERING ILLNESS

MRS. HERBERT J. RUSSELL of Worcester widely famed in Music Circles

MRS. LILLIAN (HANSON) RUSSELL, 64, wife of HERBERT J. RUSSELL and widely known as a former singer and composer, died at 11 A.M., today in her home at 23 Institute Road. Death came after several years of ill health. A heart ailment had kept MRS. RUSSELL indoors since last July.

The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 O'clock in the home and will be private. REV. DR. SHEPHERD KNAPP, pastor of Central Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery.

MRS. RUSSELL, who gained favorable attention from music critics throughout the country due to her extensive work as the soprano member of the widely-known ariel quartet and later in operatic work at Chicago and elsewhere, also was a composer. Later she turned to instruction in voice and piano. Her students included EDWIN BARLETT of Oxford, whose appearance at La Scala in Milan was the prelude of his appearance in motion pictures, light opera and musical comedy work. Another student was THOMAS RYAN, a star of light opera.

MRS. RUSSELL's work in a Chicago presentation of "FRIDTHIOF and INGEBORG" was probably her outstanding success.

She was born in Boston, the daughter of CHARLES FREDERICK and ELIZA (HAZALL) HANSON. Soon after her birth, MR. HANSON moved to Worcester, being commonly known as the first native of Sweden to settle in Worcester. A music dealer, music teacher and conductor, MR. HANSON was among the leaders of the Swedish-American group of Worcester residents and for many years operated a music store on Main Street.

MRS. RUSSELL was a member of the Worcester Woman's club and attended Central Congregational Church. She also was active in philanthropic endeavors and centered many of her activities in work for the benefit of Armenian residents of Worcester.

Besides her husband she leaves a son, CARL A. GRAY of New York; a granddaughter, LINDA GRAY, also of New York and a brother C. ARTHUR HANSON of Worcester.
