Born and raised in rural Prince William County Virginia, Rachel was the eldest of five children of Harry and Ruth Virginia (Pearson) Cornwell. She married Allen Howison Barbee on July 3, 1946
As a ‘stay-at-home’ mom, Rachel raised seven children and was busy with typical homemaking chores of gardening, canning, laundry, and cooking. As if raising her own children wasn’t challenge enough, she too provided daycare for children of neighbors and family members.
Rachel cared for her husband’s mother, Mollie Virginia Barbee, in Mollie’s later years. As a result, their home became a gathering place for all of “Ms Barbee’s” children, grandchildren, cousins, and other family and friends. There were many unofficial Barbee family reunions, often surrounding Ms Barbee’s birthdays. Sundays were a great time to drop in at the Barbee residence because you always knew there would be fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans and hot rolls. In addition to the routine fare, she cooked many country delicacies as a homemaker – venison, fish, turtle, beef tongue, calf brains, rabbit, squirrel, and fish roe. Basically, if her husband, Allen, brought it home, she would cook it!
Rachel had many interests including gardening, traveling and genealogy. She enjoyed being outdoors and spent many days each year working in her yard and flower beds. She loved to travel and spend time with her family and friends far and wide: California, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Alaska …
Rachel was active in community organizations such as Order of the Eastern Star where over the years she held several offices, including the highest in the chapter of Worthy Matron. She enjoyed fellowship and participation in the Woodbine Baptist and Gibeon Baptist churches and the Woodbine Homemakers Club. Another treat for her was interacting with the children of Coles Elementary School when she worked in the cafeteria there.
Rachel is survived by her siblings and their spouses. She is also survived by her children and their spouses; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren, Rachel/Mom/Grandma was a great inspiration and role model and tried to instill them with her values and work ethic.
