THE MATE OF THE SHIP PERUVIAN.
Mr. Thomas H. Baine, first mate of the ill-fated ship Peruvian, wrecked in the recent storm on Peaked Hill Bar, who, with the entire ship's company lost his life on that fearful night, was a much respected citizen of Dennis-His age was 37 years. He was born on the passage from England to Kingston, Jamaica, W. I.. where he lived through his early boyhood, coming to Boston with Capt. David S. Chapman, of East Dennis, at the age of about fourteen years. Soon after arrival, he fell in with Capt. Orrin Howes, at that time master of the packet schooner North, plying between Dennis and Boston, with whom he made his home until his first marriage to the daughter of the late Mr. James Howes, of Dennis. His second marriage to the daughter of the late Capt. Thomas Hall, also of Dennis , occurred some fifteen months ago. He leaves a wife and three children, all sons—two by his first marriage and one by the last, born during his absence on his last and fatal voyage. His body washed ashore near the scene of his shipwreck and death, and was brought home from Provincetown last Wednesday in the charge of his brother-in-law, Mr. Luther Hall, and was interred the next day. His body was in a perfect state of preservation, his features bearing a familiar and natural look. His grief stricken wife, children and friends had the melancholy satisfaction of looking once more upon his loved form and face, though hushed in the stillness of death—the sad privilege of depositing his remains in the burying ground of the village he loved so well—the place above all others in the wide world he would have chosen as his final resting place, though not the land of his fathers.
