Joseph was the son of Emma J. Campbell and Angus Campbell who predeceased his son of Stoneham Massachusetts, dear brother of Andrea, Arthur, and Paul Campbell. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps on March 24 1967 and upon completion of Officers Candidate School was commissioned as a 2d Lieutenant (Reserve) in Quantico Virginia. He arrived on extended active duty in Vietnam on November 16 1967 where he was assigned to and served with Company I, 3d Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the entire month of June the Battalion was placed under the operational control of the 7th Marine. Participation in Operation ALLEN BROOK was terminated during the first week of June with the remainder of the month the Marines were engaged in Operation MAMELUKE THRUST in the Quan Duc Duc District of Quang Nam Province.

On June 15, Company I became heavily engaged with a large enemy unit sustaining numerous casualties, Marine artillery support was request as the men prepared to evacuate their casualties an artillery short round impacted within the Marines perimeter. One of the casualties from the errant artillery round was 1stLt Campbell who was killed by the multi fragmentation wounds inflicted to his body.

* 1stLt Joseph Timothy Campbell was presented the NAVY CROSS posthumously "For extraordinary heroism while serving as the Executive Officer of Company I, 3d Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division (Rein) FMF ....on 15 June 1968".
