Henry was the son of Tiark Folkers Memmen and Hempe Margarethe Nannen. He was confirmed in the Lutheran church at the age of 14 years. He came to America 09/11/1851 on the Ship Edmond, arriving in New Orleans after 13 weeks. He returned to Germany in May 1852, returning to the USA in December 1852. He located in Peoria, Illinois. In 1856, he came to Clayton township and bought a farm, later owned by Garmer Klein (@1904). In 1864, Henry purchased a second farm later to become the Henry Schneider farm (@1904). There was a great storm on 10/19/1875 that blew down Henry's barn and surrounding trees. He lived there until 1875, moving into Benson where he later died. On the 1880 Census, he was listed as a farmer in Benson, Illinois with his wife Gertje, sons Tjark, Ulrich, and John, daughters Marie, Anna, Maggie, Lena, and Mina, and daughter-in-law Lizie Memmen. He was a Clayton school trustee for a number of years.
