After his 1831 marriage, he was farming, first in Muhlenberg County, Ky then in Ohio County, Ky. In 1852, he left his wife and younger children, took his two older sons, William and Samuel, and joined the California Gold Rush. After a 60-day journey, including crossing the Panama Isthmus, they landed in San Francisco in May. Like many prospectors, he eventually reverted to farming in Yolo County in the Sacramento Valley. He appears on voter registration roles and censuses there through 1880. He probably died in Yolo County, and is likely buried at Cottonwood or Capay Cemeteries.
