Helen B. Gowdy, 92, of Carmi, Illinois, died Tuesday, November 25, 2014, at Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. She was born October 19, 1922, in Burnt Prairie Township, White County, Illinois, the daughter of John Robert and Lou Ella (May) Barbre. She married Eugene F. Gowdy in San Diego, California, on May 12, 1945, and he survives.

Helen was a devout Christian, wife, mother, and grandmother. She was an active member of the First Christian Church in Carmi. She was a member of the Christian Workers Sunday School Class, participated in Bethlehem Revisited, taught in the youth group program, taught nursery children for more than 20 years and was active in the Sewing Club and church Joy Group for more than 50 years. She worked as a beautician and at the Carmi Township Hospital with terminally ill patients. Helen was also a great baby sitter for family, friends and neighbors. Her love of Christ was demonstrated through her love of people.

Mrs. Gowdy is survived by her husband, Gene Gowdy of Carmi; two daughters, LaVonne (James) Norville of Huntsville, Alabama and Donna (Richard) Floyd of Norris City, Illinois; four grandchildren, Carla Arnold, Brent Floyd, Jeffrey Norville and Joseph Floyd; 10 great grandchildren, Carrie Arnold, Caleb Arnold, Chase Kramer, Noah Floyd, Peyton Floyd, Ethan Floyd, Tyler Floyd, Katie Floyd, Devin Walters and Jace Norville.

She is preceeded in death by her parents; two brothers, Arnold Barbre and Joe Barbre; four sisters, infant Amanda Lucille Barbre, Veda Sullivan, Vonda Boultinghouse, Dorothy Hargett; and granddaughter Marisa Floyd.
