Geoffrey Chase Bissett
June 19, 1943 - November 25, 2014

Geoffrey Chase Bissett, 71, of Brownfield passed from this life November 25, 2014 surrounded by his friends and family in Amarillo, Texas. Memorial services will be held at Brownfield Church of Christ on Saturday, November 29th at 11:00 a.m. where he was an active member for many years and song leader for over 30 years until losing his voice to ALS. Bo Shero and Bob Reynolds will officiate with Todd Bissett leading singing. Arrangements are by Angel Funeral Home, 2209 S. Arthur.

Geoff was born in San Diego, California on June 19, 1943 to Garland C. and Shirley Mae Jefferies Bissett. He was raised in South Texas where he graduated from McAllen High School. After graduation, he attended Baylor University and went on to earn his bachelors in Music Education from University of North Texas. He later earned his master’s in Music Education from Texas Tech University in 2009.

He married Anita Louise Kirby Bissett, on June 24th, 1972 in Monahans, Texas. Together they had 3 children; Clayton Chase Bissett, Jerry Todd Bissett, and Kaela Rene’ Bissett Brown.

Geoff’s love of music began at an early age. He spent his life passing on his love of music to students for many years. He began his teaching career at Brownfield Middle School in 1976 and taught there for 9 years. He took a brief sabbatical from band directing to sell insurance before returning to music again in 1994 at Trinity Christian Schools. He also taught at Lamesa and Hale Center. He began at Frenship High School in 1997 and concluded his lifelong musical career there in May, 2014.

Geoff was diagnosed with ALS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, in January of 2013. His wife, Anita, was instrumental in raising money and awareness for ALS. His fight against this disease may have riddled his body but it strengthened his faith in God. His wish was that others would be shown the love of God through his faith during his fight.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Anita, just 45 days before his own passing. They fought their own disease beside each other during their last days. He is survived by his three children, Clayton Bissett and wife Dianna of Rochester Hills, Michigan; Todd Bissett and wife Rachel of Plainview; and daughter Kaela Bissett Brown and husband Brody of Amarillo, his grandchildren Karlee Kay Bissett, Brooke Amber Bissett, Dawson Ray Bissett, Benjamin Chase Bissett, Sawyer Rene’ Brown, Adyson Leigh Bissett, and Michael Francis Bissett, his brother, Scott Bissett and wife Lynn of Denton. He is preceded in death by a granddaughter, Isabel Rene’ Brown and his parents. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Teena Hall of Amarillo and D’Lyla Kirby of Abilene and Carolyn Kirby of San Angelo.

The family asks you to consider donating to Geoff’s favorite charities: American Cancer Society, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association, or Camp Blue Haven.

We thank the Brownfield Church of Christ and his many friends for their dedicated and loving acts of kindness during his illness.
