Waring Wilson Claud

Norfolk - Waring Wilson Claud, 85, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 21, in Virginia Beach after a short illness. He was the son of the late John Gillette Claud, Jr. and Miriam Jones Claud Gould. Waring was a long time resident of Norfolk. He was predeceased in death by his wife Jo Ann Mercer Claud.

Waring graduated from Maury H.S. in 1948 and received a B. S. in Business Administration from VA Tech in 1952. He served in the Navy as a Petty Officer. After the Navy he was in banking where he met his beloved Jo Ann, he later became an Insurance Broker, Certified Investment Councilor and a Chartered Life Underwriter. Waring was a member of the Khedive Shrine Temple in Chesapeake and a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, and he was a Life member of the William B. Barnett Lodge No 187 in Jacksonville, FL. Waring was very civic minded and was a charter member and the past president of the Ward's Corner Optimist Club. He was past president of the Azalea Acres Civic League. He was a faithful lifelong member and past Deacon of the Freemason Street Baptist Church. He was member of the Norfolk Botanical Gardens and got great pleasure from maintaining his own gardens. He loved 'Big Band Music' and was probably listening to it when he passed.

Waring is survived by a son, Waring Wilson Claud Jr. (Dolores) of Spotsylvania, VA; daughter, Suzanne O'Donnell (Charles) of Ponte Vedra, FL.; Brother in- law Alton C. Mercer (Sharon) of St. Charles, MO ; Nephews John W. M. Claud (Mary Clare) of Washington, D. C. ; Raymond A. Mercer (Patricia)of Laurel, MD; a niece Elizabeth Claud Florez (Alberto) of Seattle, WA. He was predeceased by his brother Joseph Gillette Claud III and his niece Lisa Courtney Mercer.

The family will receive friends at a visitation on Friday afternoon from 4 until 8 p.m. at the Norfolk Chapel of H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts., 1501 Colonial Ave. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2014 at Freemason Street Baptist Church, Norfolk with Rev. Michael Sciretti officiating. Burial will be private in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family asks that in lieu of flowers gifts be given to the Lisa Courtney Mercer scholarship fund at Virginia Weslyan College, 1584 Wesleyan Drive, Norfolk, VA 23502. H. D.
