Son of physician Andrew A. and Ella (Lopp) Baxter of Brandenburg, Andrew Edwin entered the Louisville College of Dentistry in 1921 and, in 1925, was the youngest man in the nation that year to graduate with a dental degree.

He began his practice at Irvington, Kentucky and later returned to Brandenburg, where he had spent his youth. In 1939 he came to Lexington in association with Dr. J. B. Staton, and specialized in exodontia and minor oral surgery.

A member of various social and civic organizations, his personal hobby was the study of early Native American culture and during his lifetime he assembled a large collection of artifacts.
