Melba Lorene McKinsey Barsoom, a long time resident of Reedley died after many years of chronic illnesses. She was born in a log cabin near Vandalia, MO.,the fifth of six children, three boys and three girls.

As a child, Melba walked over two miles to school every day. She was one of the 21 graduates from Middletown High School where she'd also been crowned Miss Middletown and FFA Queen.

With WWII in progress, Melba followed her older sister, Mamie Belle, to Fresno, CA where she attended Fresno State College.

In 1945 she met Reynold Barsoom at a dance. After a two year engagement, they married on June 29, 1947, and took up residence in Reedley.

Melba was given a position at Reedley College as executive secretary and registrar.

It was September 1961 when Melba and her husband Reynold moved with their three children into a new home on the Barsoom family ranch.

She then began a 25 year career as the receptionist at Kings View Hospital. She received outstanding awards upon her retirement in 1986.

As a wife, mother and grandmother, Melba took great pleasure in the accomplishments and contributions of her family.

A devoted member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, Melba was also a member of the Professional Business Women and Modernes.

In 1983, she and Reynold were honored when chosen King and Queen of the Reedley Fiesta.

Melba was preceded in death by her three brothers, Waiter, Wendell and William Lowell; and sister, Mamie Belle Dameron.

She is survived by her husband Reynold; sons Ronald and Daryl and his wife Shelley of Reedley; daughter, Gail Barbour and her husband Bill of Clovis; five grandchildren Darice, Kristin, Alex, Marti and Madeline; a sister, Betty Lemasters; and many nieces and nephews.

Viewing will be held at Cairns Funeral Home on Friday, April 14, 2006, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Burial will be at the Reedley Cemetery, 2185 South Reed Ave. in Reedley on Saturday, April 15, 2006, at 10:00 a.m.

A Church Service will follow at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd at 11:00 a.m.
