Joe William Aafedt, 85, of Great Falls, a retired postal worker, died of natural causes Tuesday [July 4, 2006] at Peace Hospice.

At his request, no services are planned. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chapel of Chimes Funeral Home.

He was a devoted husband and father to his wife, Pat, and daughter Nancy Bischof Littlejohn of Centennial, Colo.; and sons Joe Aafedt Jr. of Great Falls and Mark Hughes Aafedt of Los Angeles.

He is also survived by brothers Roy and Mel Aafedt of Great Falls; a sister, Mabel Palagi of Great Falls; a granddaughter, McKenna; and many nieces and nephews.

Joe was born in Billings on April 9, 1921, to Emma and Ole Aafedt. Until his retirement, he was a U.S. postal contractor for the Highwood Star Route.

He also loved to fly and took his plane to Canada for fishing and hunting trips when he was younger. He painted in his spare time, and his western-style artwork was sold and given as gifts to friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Clara and Emmy; and brothers Al and Ole.
