Eugene William Walther, 90, of Winona passed away Saturday, Nov. 8, 2014, at Sarasota Health and Rehabilitation Center in Sarasota, Fla.

Gene was born Aug. 10, 1924, in Winona to William August "Bill" and Eugenia Martha (Czaplewski) Walther.

Gene graduated from Winona Senior High School in 1942 and attended Whitewater Teachers College prior to enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Force. Gene proudly served his country in World War II, as a decorated sergeant, specializing in cryptography, attached to the 97th Bomb Squadron in Naples, Italy.

After his discharge from the U.S. Army Air Force in 1945, Gene graduated from the University of Minnesota Jr. College and continued his studies at the University of Minnesota majoring in engineering. He accepted a position with Honeywell of Minneapolis in 1951 and remained with the firm, principally in the Aero Division as a configuration management specialist, until his retirement in 1984.

One of his children noted: Dad had a quick wit, an infectious laugh, a mischievous twinkle in his eyes, and loved telling tall tales of his hunting and fishing adventures. He was a guy's guy and a sportsman through and through. He loved fishing and hunting, particularly deer, duck and partridge. He would often remind us that any time spent either fishing or hunting didn't count against him in life. Dad passed away at age 90 -la– according to him though, he would likely be around 40 years old.

In addition by his nieces & nephews in Indiana, his Mother would call him Sonny as a nickname while he was growing up and until her death in 1979.

He is survived by his seven children, Gregory S. (Joy) Walther, New Orleans, La., Steven E. (Diane) Walther, Hayward, Wis., Michael J. (Gale) Walther, Balsam Lake, Wis., Lynn C. (Stephen) House, Vienna, Va., James W. Walther, Springbrook, Wis., Roberta E. Walther-Doraski, Waldo, Fla., and Mark W. Walther, Sarasota; along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Eugenia; and sister, Lorraine Venita Walther Method.

Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. Monday in Mater Dolorosa Chapel at St. Mary's Cemetery in Winona. Deacon Justin Green will officiate. American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post 9 of Winona will provide military honors.

After the service, Gene will be laid to rest near his parents.
