Allen Isaac Brown enlisted under the name Isaac Brown with the 12th Ohio Cavalry but transferred to Company K, 9th Ohio Cavalry.
He was captured July 17, 1864 near Dadeville, AL and sent to a Confederate prison.

In April 1865 he was released from prison and taken to a parole camp near Vicksburg, MS to await transport back home. On April 24, 1865 he and 2,000 other recently released Union prisoners-of-war were crowded aboard the Mississippi River steamboat Sultana. At 2:00 AM on April 27, 1865, when the Sultana was 7 miles north of Memphis, TN, her boilers exploded. More than 1,500 people died. Private Isaac Brown was rescued and taken to Washington Hospital in Memphis and listed as "Uninjured."

He was mustered out of service at Camp Chase, near Columbus, OH, on June 18, 1865.

He moved to Chicago, IL and married Nellie Gainey on May 10, 1887. They had two children, Mary Helen (Dec. 12, 1887) and William Allen (June 5, 1894).

His pension records show him as Isaac Brown with AKA Allen Brown. He received an Invalid Pension on Sept. 7, 1890 and his wife received a Widow's Pension on Feb. 16, 1899.
