Dr. Gardner Howard Altman, Sr. of Fayetteville, North Carolina, who would have been 90 years old on December 21, 2014, passed away in Cape Fear Valley Hospital on Thursday afternoon, November 27, 2014. Dr. Altman had been hospitalized on Wednesday, November 19, 2014 for unscheduled surgery procedures and subsequently developed aspirational pneumonia. Up to the date of his hospitalization, he remained active in his work and ministry. On November 9th he had the privilege of dedicating his 4-week old great-granddaughter at the family farm. Although their loss is great, family and friends observe his passing as “sad but not bad” in that he lived and experienced a full and meaningful life, positively affecting many families and individuals through his dedicated work as a pastor, counselor, educator, mentor and broadcast minister.

In August 1944, Dr. Altman made a life-long commitment of marriage to Velma Lee Beasley as his wife and together they were blessed with two children, daughter Connie Lee Altman and son Gardner Howard Altman, Jr. Dr. Altman was committed to hard work, ministry and education throughout his life. He was born on December 21, 1924 in Sampson County, North Carolina. He achieved his goals as a farmer and produce broker in Harnett County, North Carolina, and then, in 1954 made a greater commitment to serving God and others through ministry and education. He graduated from Southeastern University with a degree in Theology. Subsequently, he graduated from Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) in Wilson, North Carolina, and earned postgraduate degrees from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina and Assemblies of God Theological Seminary in Springfield, Missouri. He also completed graduate work at Duke University. Additional professional distinctions and certifications included ordination as a minister by the Assemblies of God denomination, certification in hospital chaplaincy, licensure as a clinical psychologist, and receipt of an honorary Doctorate of Theology from Heritage Bible College.

His ministry included serving as District Youth Director for the North Carolina District Council of the Assemblies of God; planting and building a church in Angier, North Carolina; building, pastoring and growing Calvary Assembly of God church in Fayetteville, North Carolina from 1960 until 1984; serving as a chaplain at UNC Memorial Hospital; pastoring First Assembly of God Church in Wilson, North Carolina; serving as interim pastor for several churches in Eastern North Carolina; serving as counseling pastor for Epicenter Church in Fayetteville, North Carolina; and maintaining a daily broadcast ministry on several radio stations for more than 50 years. Dr. Altman also served and ministered to individuals and families through pastoral counseling and consultation. He has impacted an unknown number of individuals through his mentoring of hundreds of pastors, teachers, business persons and missionaries. His life was a strong and clear statement of Love and Dedication to God and his family and seeing and serving the needs of others. He was and remains a man of Faith and Works at the highest level of integrity and tolerance.

Dr. Altman was preceded in death by his wife Velma Beasley Altman and his daughter Connie Lee Altman. He is survived by his sister Doris Altman Norris of Fayetteville, NC; his son Gardner Howard Altman, Jr. of White Oak, NC; his grandchildren Kelley Altman Greer of Atlanta, GA; Howard Sowell of Raleigh, NC; Ashely Altman Bordeaux of Cary, NC; Gardner Howard Altman, III (Tres) of Wilmington, NC; and Andrew Sowell of Washington, DC. He is also survived by seven great-grandchildren.

Dr. Altman was laid to rest in Devotional Gardens Memorial Park in Dunn, NC at a private family burial service. A Celebration of Life service shall be held at Epicenter Church in Fayetteville, NC on Sunday, December 21, 2014 which would have been his 90th birthday at 3:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, Dr. Altman and family respectfully request that contributions be made to the church, ministry or charity of choice during this holiday season. (He and God are watching!)
