The compiler notes the inscription on tombstone #1123 reads “R. H. SMITH CO. F 32 ALA. REG. C.S.A.”

In the compilers opinion it should read: “A. H. SMITH CO. F 22 ALA. REG. C.S.A.”

He was taken prisoner during the Atlanta Campaign. (May 7 – September 2, 1864)and then forwarded to Nashville, Tennessee and then transferred to Louisville, Kentucky and then forwarded to Camp Chase, Ohio where he arrived on August 11, 1864.

Private Alfred H. Smith died of pneumonia on Sunday February 5, 1865 and was buried in grave number 1123.
