Robert Ben Newton was born with that given name as I have been told and not verfied yet but through time he flip floped from marriage to Jane Phelps as Benjamin, many censes have him as Robert and when laid to rest known as Ben. He was my great grandfather and growing up I always thought he was Robert Ben but when I became interested in genealogy and I went in search of his grave site I had a hard time finding him because we younger family members never heard of him called Ben. He was married twice. His first marriage was to to Jane Phelps and they had three boys. Charles Robert 1879-1915, William Sherman 1883-1957 and Ed 1889-1948. Jane Phelps died about 1890 (I have an obit of Mrs. Newton died Jan 1890 of TB in the town they were loving in at the time) when Ed was not even a year old. Robert Ben Married again to Bettie S Wilson the pastors 15 year old daughter (birth name was Mary Elizabeth Wilson) March 20, 1892, and they had one child Ben Lewis 1895-1974. Ben Lewis was my grandfather.
