Rosie I. Nelson, 81, of Rockford, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2014, after a long battle with kidney disease. Rosie was born Feb. 2, 1933, in Jonkoping Smaland, Sweden. She immigrated to America with her parents, David and Thyra Johnson in 1936. Rosie attended Garrison and Sovereign Elementary Schools, Lincoln Jr. H.S., and Rockford East H.S. She worked at Central IL Electric & Gas Co., John's Colonial Village Laundromat, and Fannie May Candies. She was a member of First Evangelical Covenant Church, teaching Sunday school, singing in the choir, and playing the piano in various capacities. Rosie was privileged to visit her relatives in Sweden a number of times, and also to take a few trips to Alaska and Hawaii. Rosie's legacy will be her God-given talent to make friends with whomever she met. Her personality co-existed with that generous smile. She will be sorely missed.

She is survived by her husband, Richard; sons, Thomas and Randall (Macky); sister-in-law, Arlene Nelson; nephews, Greg, Michael, and John; niece, Cynthia; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a large number of cousins, relatives, and friends in Sweden.

The family wishes to thank especially Heartland Hospice for their extraordinary loving care. Thanks also to Rosie's many friends and family who visited and helped in so many ways.

Memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, 2014, in First Evangelical Covenant Church, 316 Wood Rd., with Pastors Gary Kniseley and Dave Ahrens officiating.

A private graveside service will be held in Scandinavian Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to "Rosie Nelson Mission Fund" to be distributed to various Alaska missions. Arrangements by Olson Funeral & Cremation Services, Ltd.
