Son of Mr. and Mrs. Gideon Bradford. Graduated from the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, NY on June 24, 1861, 6th in a class of 34. George Armstrong Custer was number 34.
Upon graduation he served on the staff of General Davis and participated in the first battle of Bull Run. Later he was assigned to the Ordnance Department in Washington D.C. In April 1863 he was severely injured while testing guns and was thus unfit for field service. While healing he was assigned as an instructor at West Point in mathematics and chemistry.
In the spring of 1864 he was sufficiently healed to be ordered to Columbus, OH to supervise construction of the United States Arsenal in that city. On March 15,1865 he was promoted to Brevet Major for Faithful and Meritorious Service in the Ordnance Department. Once the arsenal completed, Bvt. Major Bradford was assigned to command the San Antonio, TX Arsenal. While there he contracted an illness and in 1870 was again assigned as an instructor at West Point, this time in ordnance and gunnery. It was here he died on January 12, 1872.
