To honor Lonnie's life, a funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, December 8, 2014, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., with Sr. Margaret Anne Kramer. To celebrate Lonnie's life, family and friends may visit from 1:00 until 5:00 p.m. today at Behr Funeral Home. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery, where full military honors will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corp. League.
Lonnie was born on August 8, 1948, in Dubuque, Ia., son of Danniel and Hazel (Davis) Smothers.
Lonnie graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1966.
He proudly served 2 tours in Vietnam with the U.S. Army.
Lonnie owned his own business and was in construction most of his life but also drove truck for awhile.
He was a member of the Tri-State Vietnam Veterans, the D.A.V., the Moose Lodge, the American Legion and the North American Fishing Club.
He enjoyed fishing, gardening, camping, country music and playing his guitar.
Lonnie is survived by his children; Rhonda Smothers, Brian (Kelly) Smothers, Angel Smothers, Cody Smothers and Tasha Smothers, all of Dubuque. 11 Grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Brother, Eddie (Marlene) Smothers, of Dubuque. Sister, Gayle Kruser, of East Dubuque, and Sister-in-law, Janie Smothers.
Lonnie was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Juanita and Brenda, and his brother, Marvin.
A Lonnie D. Smothers memorial fund has been established.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Ennoble Manor for their compassionate care of Lonnie.
